VIDEO: Get into your body to tame your mind

If we want to manage the content our minds, then all the effort to do so through mind practices and self talk techniques can yield limited results.

Have you noticed how, with the best will in the world, you might try to control your thoughts with little success. Willpower and determination only get us so far.

Key to managing our thoughts is through the body. The internal states we operate in, largely unconsciously,  ‘drive the bus’ – these form the foundation of the quality of thoughts we may have.

So, in order to tame our minds and shift our thoughts from say stressful ones to benign ones, getting into a good internal state of feeling with simple somatic practices can yield far quicker outcomes for the state of our mind.

This is where our agency lies to truly change or tame our minds.

Story follows State – Dr Deb Dana’s simple yet profound concept from Dr Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory stipulates that our thoughts and the stories we tell ourselves are dependent upon the nervous system we happen to be in. Connecting to and changing our internal state therefore can change our minds for the better.
