Post Traumatic Growth: Moving Beyond Healing and Into Transformation
Part of our healing work includes post-traumatic growth, a powerful stage of our healing journey where we begin to move beyond understanding our past and start creating our future

There comes a point in many healing journeys when something begins to shift. The focus moves away from constantly looking backwards and understanding what happened to us, and towards creating the future we want for ourselves. This powerful stage is known as post-traumatic growth.
Post-traumatic growth is not about pretending difficult experiences never happened. It is not about bypassing pain or rushing the healing process. Instead, it is a stage of recovery where we begin to recognise our strength, resilience, and capacity for change.
For many people, healing starts with understanding the past
We spend time exploring our experiences, recognising our triggers, and becoming aware of coping strategies that may once have protected us but no longer serve us. We learn to identify the unconscious patterns that have shaped our behaviour and responses to life's challenges.
As we do this inner work, something important happens. We begin to make the unconscious conscious. Instead of feeling as though life is happening to us, we start to understand what is occurring within us. We recognise when we have been triggered. We notice when old coping mechanisms are taking over. Most importantly, we begin to realise that we have a choice.
This is where post-traumatic growth begins
One of the most empowering aspects of post-traumatic growth is developing a sense of agency. Rather than reacting automatically to difficult situations, we learn to respond consciously. We gain greater awareness of our emotions, thoughts, and behaviours, allowing us to make decisions that align with the life we want to create.
Triggers do not disappear completely. Difficult moments can remain and we are invariably challenged – this is part of the human experience.
However, through healing and self-awareness, we become better equipped to navigate them. We start to recognise potential triggers before they overwhelm us, and when they do arise, we understand that we have options.
This can lead to a profound sense of empowerment
We may notice increased confidence, emotional resilience, and energy. We often feel more in control of our lives and better able to make choices that support our wellbeing. Rather than being pulled back into old patterns, we begin moving forward with intention and purpose.
Yet post-traumatic growth is not always straightforward
While this stage can feel exciting, hopeful, and liberating, it can also bring unexpected challenges. As we step into a new version of ourselves, we are often letting go of old identities that have been with us for many years.
This process can feel surprisingly emotional.
Many people experience a sense of grief during this phase of healing. We may grieve former versions of ourselves, even those versions we no longer wish to be. We might grieve opportunities we missed, relationships that changed, or the life we wished we had experienced.
Letting go can feel bittersweet.
There can be moments of confusion, conflict, and uncertainty as we occupy what is often called a liminal space. We are no longer the person we were, but we have not quite become the person we are growing into. This space can feel uncomfortable, yet it is often where some of the most meaningful transformation takes place.
The key is to approach this process with compassion
Rather than rejecting former versions of ourselves, we can acknowledge them with understanding and gratitude. These parts of us served a purpose. They helped us survive. As we continue to grow, we can integrate those experiences and lay old ghosts to rest with love rather than judgment.
This creates space for something new.
We can begin exploring who we want to become. We can experiment with different ways of responding to challenges. We can make conscious choices that reflect our values and aspirations. Little by little, we build a life that feels more aligned, authentic, and fulfilling.
Support during this stage can be incredibly valuable
While post-traumatic growth is a sign of progress, it can also feel unfamiliar and uncertain. Having a safe space to explore these changes can help make the transition gentler and more sustainable.
Through approaches such as somatic coaching, embodied healing, and therapeutic bodywork, it is possible to deepen this process of growth and transformation. By bringing awareness to both the mind and body, healing becomes something we not only understand intellectually but also experience on a deeper level.
If you recognise yourself in this stage of healing, know that you are not alone. If you have done significant inner work and find yourself between who you were and who you are becoming, it may be a sign that you are experiencing post-traumatic growth.
This can be a beautiful and powerful part of the healing journey. It is an opportunity to move beyond survival, to embrace resilience, and to create a life guided by conscious choice, self-awareness, and hope.
