When Release Isn't Enough: Understanding Trauma, Stress and the Nervous System

Is it possible to release stress and trauma in a one off group workshop for catharsis?

If you are stressed, consider somatic massage or somatic coaching and know that your body has a whole set of inbuilt ways to help you manage your inner states.

If you're someone who feels overwhelmed much of the time, becomes easily activated, reacts strongly to seemingly small things, or perhaps swings between anxiety and shutting down, you're not alone.

Often, these experiences are signs of a nervous system that has become over-activated. This can develop through chronic stress, difficult life experiences, childhood experiences, trauma, or simply years of living under pressure.

Understandably, many people find themselves searching for a way to make it go away. A way to feel calm, regulated, connected and fully themselves again.

This is where we can feel attracted to the promise of cathartic release events. Workshops that encourage screaming, shouting, hitting pillows or expressing long held emotions in dramatic ways. The idea is appealing: release the stress, release the trauma, and move on. I wish it were that simple.

These experiences can absolutely feel powerful. In the moment, there can be a genuine sense of liberation, empowerment and relief. We can feel energised, alive and free. But what is often missing from the conversation is what happens afterwards.

When the event ends, the group energy disappears. The container is gone. Any support or aftercare may be absent. And many people find themselves back home with the same nervous system, the same triggers and the same reactions. Some might even experience a backlash of shame, confusion or further shutdown after expressing emotions in ways that felt unfamiliar or out of character.

The challenge is that overwhelm isn't usually a single thing that can simply be released once and removed forever. Rather it's often the result of a nervous system that has learned certain patterns of response over time and continues to repeat them when triggered. Real change happens differently.

It happens through understanding. Through learning to recognise your patterns, understanding your triggers, developing awareness and gradually building the capacity to stay present with difficult experiences. It happens through creating safety first.

This is one of the principles at the heart of Soma Massage.

Rather than encouraging dramatic release without support, the work focuses on establishing safety, building nervous system capacity and creating a compassionate space where emotional releases can happen naturally, at a pace that feels manageable.

Most importantly, there is time to explore and understand what has happened afterwards. The goal isn't simply release. The goal is integration.

Transformation doesn't happen because we force our bodies to let go. It happens when we understand what's occurring within us, develop the capacity to respond differently, and gradually retrain the nervous system over time.

It isn't particularly glamorous. It isn't dramatic. But it is often where lasting change occurs.

If you recognise yourself in these patterns, if you've attended cathartic events and been left wondering what happened afterwards, or if you're curious about a gentler, more informed approach to somatic work, then Soma Massage may be worth exploring.

Resilience isn't accessed through one big release. Nor do we shed our stresses and traumas in one fell swoop unfortunately.  This is a personal and most appropriately private process that is encouraged and cultivated through safety, understanding, awareness and compassionate practice, gradually, safely and in a conscious way with you in the driving seat at all times.
