How to offer a complete Client Centred Approach
Beyond technique and conversation, learn the art of sustained, embodied attunement
Listen to this article
One of the core principles of the Soma Massage Method™ is a truly client centred approach. At first glance that may sound obvious. Many therapists already see themselves as client centred and committed to high quality care. The difference here is the depth. In our method, client centred work is not only about what we say or the techniques we apply. It is an attuned way of being that our clients can feel. It reaches beyond conversation and beyond the treatment room. It begins with us, before we even greet our clients, and it continues after they leave.
Presence over Personality
Client centred care starts with presence over personality. Our skills, warmth and knowledge matter of course. Yet what our clients needs most is our steady, grounded presence. It is this that helps the nervous system settle, allowing for trust to grow and creating a safe space for the body to soften and speak.
When we focus on presence, we meet each client as they are, rather than steering them towards what we think they might need. We listen with our whole being. We slow down enough to notice the small cues in our client that show comfort or tension.
To offer this level of attention, we have to care for ourselves outside sessions. The Soma Massage Method™ invites therapists to tend to their own needs with honesty. Rest, nourishment, movement, boundaries and reflective practice are not luxuries. They are the ground that enable us to be fully available in session. When we present well resourced, we can hold space without rushing to fix, advise or impress. We can be fully present, leaving our personality at the door. Our clients will feel that steadiness below cognition, before any words are spoken.
Beyond Embodied Presence comes Embodied Attunement
Attunement takes us then beyond embodied presence. It includes mental focus, emotional steadiness, physical awareness, clear energy, relational sensitivity and ethical behaviour. It is practical and observable. Our body language communicates safety or strain. Our own breath, pace and posture can either soothe or unsettle. In the Soma Massage Method™ we pay close attention to these signals and learn how to navigate our own body language to support our clients. Equally we learn to track the microshifts in our clients’ breath, tone and muscle responses. This attuned awareness and mindful responsiveness tells our clients that we are with them, not doing something to them.
On the Couch – a Conversation through Touch
Treatments take place mostly in silence, and in this way, the treatment becomes a conversation through presence and touch. We welcome silence and follow the client’s cues. If they need more contact, we slow and stay. If they need space, we give it and check consent. If emotion arises, we hold steady and help them ground. We read the room and their body throughout their treatment.
Boundaries build Safety
It is important to note that client centred does not mean client led without boundaries. Structure creates safety. With clear communication and robust protocols, we stay within our scope of practice and signpost to other professionals if needed. We avoid making claims or pushing outcomes. Instead, we support the client’s own process and invite awareness. Over time, this builds somatic awareness, trust and raises resilience.
Intention is Everything
For therapists who have long relied on technique, this shift can feel subtle yet powerful. We offer bodywork, yet the intention is different. Rather than trying to fix, we accompany. Rather than performing, we attend. Rather than filling the space, we make room. Clients often describe a sense of being seen and met. They speak of dropping into themselves, and of leaving with clearer boundaries and steadier energy. These are not accidents. They are just some of the natural outcomes of sustained, embodied attunement.
On our course, we go deep into the practice of presence. You will learn:
- How to prepare yourself before sessions so you arrive grounded and clear
- How to use body language, breath and pace to convey safety
- How to track and respond to our clients’ subtle nervous system cues
- How to hold consent and boundaries with ease and clarity
- How to offer simple, accessible somatic resources for clients to explore at home
We explore the therapeutic relationship as a living system. We look at what supports co regulation in the room and how that teaches clients self regulation over time. We practise skills that help us stay steady when a client is anxious, flat or overwhelmed, without moving into fixing or withdrawal.
If this approach resonates and you want to deepen your skills, you are welcome to join our course and experience this learning in community.
