If you are stressed, consider somatic massage or somatic coaching and know that your body has a whole set of inbuilt ways to help you manage your inner states.

Presence is a word we hear often, yet rarely pause to fully feel or understand. In the Soma Massage method, presence is not just a concept. It is a foundational principle. One that has the power to transform how we relate to ourselves and others. At its core, presence is about being fully here. Not distracted. Not performing. Not thinking ahead. Just deeply, attentively with what is.

Why Presence Matters

In therapeutic work, presence is not something that can be faked. It is something that is felt. Clients do not just hear what is said. Their nervous systems pick up on the quality of attention, the level of attunement, and the depth of connection being offered. This happens below conscious awareness. When a practitioner brings full, embodied presence into a session, something powerful begins to unfold. Clients start to feel safe enough to soften. To unwind. To let go of the layers they have been holding onto.

This is where real healing begins.

Meeting Without Judgement

True presence requires us to meet another person exactly where they are, without judgement, assumption, or expectation. In The Soma Massage Method™, this means the practitioner steps out of their own story. Personal thoughts, distractions, and identity are set aside to make space for the client. This is not about detachment. It is about deep connection without interference. When clients feel this level of acceptance, they are given a rare opportunity. They can begin to meet themselves in the same way.

The Cost of Living in Performance Mode

Many people move through life in what could be described as performance mode. There are roles to fulfil, responsibilities to manage, and expectations to meet. Even self-care can become another task to squeeze into an already full schedule. In the midst of all this doing, it is easy to lose touch with who we really are.

Moments of genuine presence, where someone is fully with us without distraction or agenda, are surprisingly rare. Even within close relationships, this level of attunement can be difficult to sustain. This is why therapeutic presence is so powerful. It creates a space that many people have never truly experienced before.

Being Seen, Heard, and Felt

Within a Soma Massage session, presence allows clients to feel fully seen, heard, and validated. There is no need to perform. No need to explain or justify. Just space to be.

In this environment, clients can begin to drop their guard. To move beyond protective patterns that may have once been necessary but are no longer serving them. This process of “de-armouring” is not forced. It happens naturally when the body senses it is safe to do so.

Presence Invites Vulnerability.

To be truly present with ourselves requires honesty. It asks us to acknowledge what we feel, without distraction or avoidance. For many, this can feel unfamiliar or even uncomfortable at first. Protective strategies often develop for good reason. They have helped us navigate life up until now, but in a space of genuine presence, supported by another regulated nervous system, something begins to shift. Clients can explore themselves more deeply, at their own pace.

Co-Regulation and Connection

One of the most powerful aspects of presence is co-regulation. When a practitioner is calm, grounded, and fully present, the client’s nervous system can begin to mirror that state. This shared regulation creates the conditions for deeper healing. For clients who may struggle to regulate on their own, this experience can be profoundly impactful. It offers a felt sense of connection, safety, and stability.

A Space for Transformation

Presence is not passive. It is deeply active in its stillness. It creates the conditions for transformation by allowing clients to reconnect with themselves. To understand who they are beneath the layers of expectation, stress, and protection. This is the essence of The Soma Massage Method™. Not just physical touch, but relational depth. Not just technique, but connection.

In a world that constantly pulls our attention in multiple directions, presence is a rare and powerful gift.

To offer it to another person is profound. To offer it to yourself is life-changing.
