VIDEO: The Origins of a Dysregulated Nervous System

Jan Normanton • June 13, 2023

A dysregulated nervous system. What this means is, it is primed, this gut brain is primed for stress. It detects danger all the time. You could argue it malfunctions but not really; what it’s doing is reacting to previous stressful states it has been through and it recalls the memory of these stressful states.

So anybody who’s experienced trauma for instance will be wired to be in that state of lack of safety over and over again due to an original trauma, whether that happened 5 minutes ago, five years ago, 50 years ago. This gut brain doesn’t know time, so if we had developmental trauma, a trauma that happened to us in childhood, it could have happened before we were able to speak, could have happened in our mother’s womb for instance, then the body remembers.

The body holds every single memory it has ever encountered in life. And so from that memory of an original trauma, this nervous system will be wired to be primed to react to that original trauma. And so anything in the fullness of time since that original trauma may trigger us into the same physiological response by the nervous system of the original trauma.
